Peter Gabriel Marches To His Own Drummer
The Neighbourhood, familiar with those of you, fully well know that he's prone to zag, at the precise moment you believe he aught to zig. 'Scratch My Back' the new album and the tour are no exception, but are exceptional. Whereas I once again find myself saluting him for having the stones to do it, I'm still coming to terms with the concept of his coverage of a fairly obscure selection of tunes penned by other artists. His stylization is so potent that it's easy to slip into the funk of forgetting that they're his tunes not. He makes them all his own. The arrangements seem to mimic each other in a formula that gets under my skin, my biggest gripe is. A whisper to a scream, if you will. It is although a sonically and spiritually better experience, live.
Mr. Gabriel performed his new offering for the first set of the show. Joining him on stage with backing vocals were Melanie Gabriel and Ane Brun, often referred to as the Scandinavian Dolly Parton. The New Blood Orchestra was phenomenal. I won't say that the orchestral arrangements were lush as that would be cheating them terribly. Divine better suits the description. Ben Foster was superb at the helm. PG seemed comfortable and capable with the material. The first set was a bit of a drone, personally I'm not complaining. It was what it was and that was completely by design. The video clips and special effects were outstanding.
In contrast, he pulled out and dusted off the PG relics for the second set and that was somewhat more compelling. Radio City seemed to become awakened. Hearing the classic PG tracks with lovely, flowing orchestral arrangements, was moving. Even the Master himself seemed happier. Evidently, this tour has an extremely limited number of engagements. The dough factor for carting around an entire orchestra is fairly cost prohibitive. If at all possible, get to one of these once in a lifetime performances, especially if you're a die-hard Gabriel fan. Just please do us all a favor and don't scream out idiotic song requests like 'Supper's Ready' in the middle of the numbers.
